Marriage Certificates
Couples who will be married in the State of Massachusetts must appear together at the office of any city or town clerk in the Commonwealth to file the Intention of Marriage. Following completion of a Marriage Intention, a three day waiting period is required before a license can be issued. A waiver of the waiting period for marriage licenses to be issued by the clerk of the Town of Dalton may be granted by the MA District Court Clerk’s office, 24 Wendell Avenue, Pittsfield, MA 01201, phone (413) 442-5468. Upon issuance, the couple may bring the court waiver to the town clerk and a marriage license may be issued immediately.
Persons seeking a marriage license must be at least eighteen years old or have a court order providing for an exception. No premarital blood test is required.
A marriage license is valid for sixty days from the date of filing the Intention of Marriage. Following the ceremony, the officiant must sign the license and return it to the city or town clerk where it was issued.
The current fee for filing the Intention of Marriage is $35.00 which includes a certified copy of the Record of Marriage. Additional certified copies of the Record of Marriage are available for $10.00 each.
